Globetops partnered with Industry City complex this past Earth Day to host a device drive. I handled the art direction while a talented colleague of mine (@luisterdesign) volunteered his graphic design skills to create this poster.

The design was translated from poster to Instagram post, and the assets have been added to the nonprofit’s library.

💥Little Weirds by Jenny Slate💥 … I loved every line. It broke me down quite a few times. I recommend this for anyone in a poetry phase trying to transition back into novels. 💥Life After Death by Damien Echols💥 stirred up my soul. I finished it last night in The Rockwell Place bar with an ‘adult dr pepper’, waiting for a friend. I devoured this book throughout the better part of this last week. I loved it so much I was a little heartsick I let it sit on my nightstand for so long in the queue. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about abrupt and dramatic changes in environment. The study for starkly different realities. This book hugely satisfied that interest. Damien Echols is a public figure that has suffered from a great deal of misunderstanding so if you feel inclined to check out this book, my best advice to you is to create a lot of context by watching the three part HBO doc, Paradise Lost, and visiting wm3.org for more information on the Robin Hood Hills murder case. 💥Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler💥 I’ve spent the better part of 2021 with this unfinished trilogy’s heroine, Olamina. Butler accurately predicts a Trump like leader in the first book, and then explores the affects of his leadership in this second book. Even though her businessman turned religious politician fascist super villain is much *smarter* and *charming* than the former president, it’s jolting how intense the similarities can be. We don’t really have any cathartic post Trump material for processing, too soon, unfortunately - however, this pre Trump era dystopian sequel definitely works. These books, especially the second in particular, have made me think a lot about the lack of systems of protection for women in our society. And how our fragile infrastructure and its inevitable failings, could make our situation worse. These books have given me nightmares; they’ve made me feel more alert and less trusting; they’ve woken me up. Though unpleasant, I think it’s extremely important to surrender to beginning to comprehend the pain of other, specific groups of people. 💥Rest is Resistance, a Manifesto by Tricia Hersey💥 I cannot recommend this book enough. Get 3, 4, 5 copies for the overworked people in your life for Christmas! Write a little note about how they need to take a fucking chill pill in the inner cover. This is essential reading for everyone. Hersey, a poet as well as author, visionary, is funny, firm, and heartbreaking. I love how her grandmother is her muse for the work. I cannot believe this book fell in my lap after finishing Butler’s Parable of the Sower, as it is referenced many times for inspiration. I’m so grateful to have this time to explore the work of Octavia Butler and Tricia Hersey side by side. I’m so grateful for this last year of resting, focusing on things I never made time for in the past. Check this book out! 💥Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler💥 … is way more visceral and intense and intuitive of the future than any Sci - Fi I’ve read thus far. Butler is invested in the literal, the crumbling infrastructure of this country; how all of our societal weak points will bite us in the ass, soon. Her writing, along with her predictions for the 2020s, took my breath away. She made me laugh and weep for her character’s losses. It’s really a book about what’s left after you’ve lost everything. Who could you be in the most dyer circumstances. I’m a huge fan, I straight up can’t wait to jump into another one of her books.

💥Woman’s Inhumanity to Woman by Phyllis Chesler💥 I’ve been reading this book for two years - I finished it today and wept. It’s a dense, 500 pager, but it took that much time to really process and absorb the chapters. This book came into my life in that eerie way books tend to do - right when I needed it. Note there is so much research that goes into this book, about everything from primate activity to Greek mythology to psychological case studies. It was very difficult to choose these quote nuggets but I hope they entice you to drop some money on a fresh copy and destroy it with loads of highlighter colors, notes, and personal writings like I have. And to continue the lifelong study of disturbing internalized misogyny.

💥Black Hole by Charles Burns💥 to get me right back into graphic novels! Super creepy. Super 70s. Super visceral. Totally dug it.

💥The Body is Not an Apology: The Power of Radical Self-Love by Sonya Renee Taylor 💥 Absolutely rocked my world! Every line of this book is a golden nugget of wisdom - it was very difficult to harvest a limited amount of quotes. This is easily required reading. And it’s definitely appropriate for young folks - start em early on this radical self-love process. I’ve decided to take a break from the self improvement reads because a lot of times it can feel redundant or accusing. That is NOT the experience I had with this book. I’m really glad I chose it to put a cap on that phase for the moment because it made me laugh, cry; I was really interested in and entertained by Taylor’s writing voice. Her wordsmithing and analogies are loads of fun and really help imbed the messaging. *** Don’t mind Cupid’s bit of hair on the couch, (his body is not an apology!).

💥Mothers, Daughters & Body Image by Hillary L McBride💥 As pictured on my mother’s coffee stained writing table. I was extremely fortunate to have a mother ahead of the curve on self empowerment. She infused a seriously ridiculous amount of confidence in me. However, as I’ve grown older, and her influence has become smaller in my day to day life, I’ve found myself in the trenches of other women’s self esteem and my own. This piece is a part of the lifetime study. It’s super nurturing and full of juicy nuggets of wisdom.

💥Social Studies by Fran Lebowitz💥 Coincidentally, I started the chapter on Los Angeles when I was 15 minutes from descending into LAX. That definitely made me grin under my mask. Fran has kept me grinning under my mask for the past couple months.

💥Metropolitan Life by Fran Lebowitz💥 After watching Marty’s miniseries on Netflix, following Fran Lebowitz around NYC, I thought it might be time to read her books. Don’t be fooled by the fancy cover for Metropolitan Life - I ordered the Fran Lebowitz reader as it was much cheaper. It doesn’t photograph as glamorous but it’s much easier to toss around and abuse for a physical copy. It’s essential to read her work in like the 4th - 6th year of living in NYC. Just when you start to get a little jaded - fantasizing about moving upstate. She reels you right back into why you came in the first place. All these years I chased an embodiment of NYC - thinking I’d like to *talk* to the place. Understand what is wants (or doesn’t want) from me. All along it’s been her. Order her Reader. She’ll make you laugh - she’ll offend you - she’ll roast you - she’ll teach you about yourself.

💥The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan💥 is agonizing. With every line, it’s going to work you up. 🤬 At the time it came out, 1963, a rebellious revelation, but today, it is a brutal reminder of the plight of white women. It’s redundant and certainly old fashioned, but it’s our truth and I’d always been curious about it. In the inside cover, the book is dedicated to “all the new women, and all the new men.” And I think that’s true, this book will evolve into a weird sociological tool for privileged future generations. It’s important not to forget how we nearly became the chotchkie on our mantel.

💥Her Body And Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado💥 quenched that thirst after In The Dreamhouse (see former post). Machado’s work takes my breath away; this quotage is more PG 13 than some of my other favorites. Every chapter twists sex, contention, crime, and beauty. 📚 from the library of @littlesarahbigworld, thank you ✨

💥Women and Madness by Phyllis Chesler💥 is required reading! This physical book is one of few cherished belongings. 💥In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado💥 spooked me. It’s an incredibly well written memoir on the dynamic of toxic, abusive lesbian relationships. At times, this book had me doubled over laughing on my couch, and other times, I was too afraid to turn the page. It is the first memoir I ever read that partners with sociological analysis. And I adore the references to folklore. Reading this book is sort of like coming across your older sister’s diary and being so grateful you’re a fucking snoop.
